Rewatched the entire 1st season of digimon over the past week for the first time since it aired (I was like 11?).
I was surprised how hard it had aged–the animation was glaringly limited, and the one-liners, puns, and voice acting (mega-seadramon and cherrymon oh my god) were awful. In many ways it was just another Saturday morning cartoon. But I could now appreciate things about the show I was too young to back then.

I was really impressed that self improvement was such a prominent theme, and that these kids, who were supposed to be like 10-12 sincerely pursued self improvement as an important goal.

I’m thinking Matt specifically, there’s this one episode where he goes off to reflect and says all the others have grown so much, but he can’t recognize his own growth. An evil digimon uses this to trick him, telling him Tai is holding him back from achieving his true potential–which had serious plot-consequence: it causes Matt to temporarily leave the group.
It also struck me how they were all very self-reflective, thinking of how the others in the group perceived them “the older brother”/”the leader”/”the responsible one” etc and trying to do their best to fulfill their roles for the benefit of the team: “believe in me who believes in you”

I remember watching as a kid and thinking all the digidestined were so cool as much for their gloves, goggles, and belts as for these ideals they held. I didn’t know if I took all that stuff as seriously yet myself, but it made an impact on me that these characters did.

I still love watching cartoons today, Clarence, Gumball, Teen Titans, but while they’re really fun and much more well-animated, they lack that kind of sophistication–self reflective characters, self reflection and growth as major plot points– and I really miss it.

READ THIS. It was posted on FB today, then someone commented on it and said their 19year old son even got one in the mail TODAY.

If you live in Sacramento read this and protect your selves as well as friends, family, and peers. Huge human trafficking area!!!

Guys, Vector Marketing is a Cutco style pyramid scheme. You take a short class that they pay for and try to get you to sell knives to all of your friends by making appointments with family members. Kids in my town get duped into doing it all the time and end up alienating the hell out of their friends. IT’S NOT HUMAN TRAFFICKING. DO YOUR RESEARCH. THIS SHIT HAS OVER 127000 NOTES.
